What is neurological physiotherapy?

Fisioterapia Neurológica Vélez Málaga Viten

Neurological physiotherapy treats the symptoms and functional difficulties caused by an injury or disorder affecting the nervous system.

Our neurological physiotherapists use advanced treatment techniques to regulate muscle tone, retrain postural control and help patients regain or improve the skills they need for everyday activities.

Treatment also focuses on reducing the effects of neurological damage and preventing secondary complications such as pain, deformities, contractures and fatigue.

The overall aim is to improve each patient’s independence, functionality and quality of life.

Who can benefit from neurological physiotherapy?

Neurological physiotherapy is suitable for adults and children with a wide range of neurological conditions. We provide rehabilitation for patients with both acquired and congenital neurological disorders, adapting every programme to their age, diagnosis, functional abilities and personal goals.

How do we approach neurological rehabilitation?

At Viten, every patient receives a personalised treatment programme based on their diagnosis, individual condition and functional needs.

Treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment. This enables us to establish clear rehabilitation goals, measure progress and adapt the programme as the patient’s abilities and needs change.

Our neurological rehabilitation programmes address essential areas such as:

  • Muscle tone regulation: Treatment of hypotonia, hypertonia, spasticity and fluctuating muscle tone.
  • Sensory rehabilitation: Helping patients recover or compensate for changes in both superficial and deep sensation.
  • Postural control and balance: Retraining the automatic reactions involved in maintaining posture and balance, improving stability and helping prevent falls.
  • Restoring mobility: Treating movement restrictions and improving range of motion, strength and stability to support everyday function.
  • Functional rehabilitation: Practising activities required in daily life, including transfers, standing, walking and moving around independently.
  • Prevention of secondary complications: Reducing the risk of contractures, deformities, loss of mobility and deterioration in cardiorespiratory function.

Types of neurological physiotherapy treatment

Our Neurological Physiotherapy Unit offers different treatment programmes according to the needs, condition and rehabilitation goals of each patient:

  • Increasing the frequency and intensity of therapy can produce better functional outcomes in selected patients.

Our intensive programmes take place over one month and include two-hour daily sessions, providing a total of either 20 or 40 hours of rehabilitation.

Each session is divided into three stages:

    1. Preparation and regulation of the muscles.
    2. Muscle strengthening.
    3. Functional practice focused on the goals agreed with the patient.

  • Group therapeutic exercise: For patients who benefit from exercising alongside others, we offer group therapeutic exercise sessions. These sessions focus on movement, coordination, balance and functional skills within a supportive and collaborative environment.
  • Postural rehabilitation: This specialist treatment addresses contractures, stiffness and postural deformities. It may include stretching, positioning techniques, postural re-education and the use of assistive devices when required.
  • Neuromuscular stimulation: We use advanced technology and specialist techniques to improve communication between the brain, nervous system and muscles. Neuromuscular stimulation can support motor relearning and help patients recover or improve their ability to move.

Group therapeutic exercise

The benefits of neurological physiotherapy depend on the patient’s condition, level of impairment and individual circumstances. The main potential benefits include:
